Nepali dessert company eying global markets

Makkusé, a new Nepali dessert company, said that it hopes to increase its presence as a Nepali dessert brand not only in Nepal, but on a global scale.

It hopes to be the name behind Nepali desserts for a global consumers, and work towards building the unique identity of Nepali desserts to be recognised worldwide.

Whenever we think of desserts of a particular country, a unique picture comes into one’s minds. What picture comes into your minds when you think of Nepali desserts? We believe that Makkusé could be the answer,” said Anushka Shrestha, CEO and Co-Founder of Makkusé.

The company has just completed a month since its launch.

According to Shrestha, it aimed to revive authentic Nepali recipes while adding in a modern flavour and presenting it to the larger Nepali and global consumers they launched their line-up of pustakaris, gundpak and gundpak-infused cookies.

Makkusé offers Pustakari (traditional milk-based hard candy), Rosewater and Pistachio Gundpak, Mocha Gundpak, Chocolate Gundpak Fudge Cookies and Gundpak-infused oatmeal pumpkin seeds cookies.

The products are made of pure condensed milk, popularly known as 'Khuwa'.

This ties into their attempt to strike a balance between preserving authentic tastes, with innovative recipes.

“Gundpak, pustakari have historically been consumed for not just their great taste but also have been appreciated for their nutritional value. We have tried to maintain that authenticity while being creative with the immense possibilities that were presented," said the company in a statement.

Shrestha is Miss World Nepal 2019 and a graduate in management from an Australian university.
