Kathmandu, Aug. 6
The body of record-breaking Nepali mountaineer Pur Bahadur Gurung
(Yukta), who died in an avalanche while climbing Broad Peak in Pakistan, was brought
to Nepal on Thursday.
His body will be placed for public tributes for a short period at
the office of the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) in Kathmandu.
Following the condolence ceremony organised by the NMA, his body
will be taken to his residence. Gurung's final rites will be performed at
Swayambhu on Friday in accordance with Buddhist religious traditions.
Gurung (Yukta) was one of Nepal's most experienced mountaineers and
mountain guides.
He was among the 10 Nepali and foreign climbers who lost their lives
in the avalanche on Broad Peak (8,047 metres) in Pakistan. The avalanche on
Thursday morning, July 30, claimed the lives of all 10 climbers, including
internationally renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja who was leading a
10-member team – six Nepalis and one each from China, Oman, Pakistan and the
United States.
Gurung's body was recovered on Friday, July 31 along with Nadhira
Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy of Oman.
