FCAN completes suspension bridge connecting Dhunge, Trishuli

Kathmandu, Oct. 16

A suspension bridge connecting Dhunge Bazaar in Nuwakot with Trishuli Bazaar, an important commercial centre, officially came into operation on Friday.

The 267-metre-long bridge, built with financial support from the Federation of Contractors’ Associations of Nepal (FCAN), was inaugurated by its president Nicholas Pandey on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, Pandey said contractors had set an example by completing the bridge in about a month. "Following the August 26 Bhotekoshi flood, construction entrepreneurs in Nuwakot had turned their grief over losing family members into strength and built the bridge in a remarkably short period, benefiting thousands of local residents every day," he said.

According to him, the construction of this bridge has disproved the notion that construction entrepreneurs cannot deliver quality work on time.

He also said construction entrepreneurs from across the country had contributed more than Rs. 100 million to the Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund.

Pandey said construction entrepreneurs could deliver even better results if the bureaucracy did not create obstacles. He added that the FCAN had consistently provided various forms of assistance whenever the country faced disasters.

Chhatra Bahadur Tamang, president of the Bagmati Province FCAN, expressed confidence that the construction of a bridge benefiting thousands of people within a short period would also bring about a positive change in society’s perception of construction entrepreneurs.

Bidur Municipality Mayor Rajan Shrestha and Nuwakot District Coordination Committee Chief Rajendra Bikram Singh Thakuri, among others, praised the federation for undertaking what they described as one of its finest and most historic initiatives under its corporate social responsibility efforts, the FCAN said in a statement.

Shailendra Raj Pyakurel, president of the Nuwakot Contractors’ Association, said the government should also learn from the FCAN's work.
