The Nepali Centre
of North Carolina (NCNC) has handed over a cheque for US$72,000 (about Rs. 11.1
million) for deposit into the Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund (PMDRF) to
support families affected by the Bhotekoshi flood that occurred on August 26.
A delegation from
NCNC led by its president Dadhin Pandey, including Shyam Aryal, Dr. Pallavi
Sharma and other office-bearers, presented the cheque to Finance Minister Dr.
Swarnim Wagle at a programme held at the Nepali Embassy in Washington, DC, on
Monday.
The NCNC said in a
statement that Minister Dr. Wagle said the support extended by Nepali
organisations based abroad in response to a natural disaster in Nepal reflected
a generous spirit. He said such assistance had provided significant relief to
families affected by the disaster.
Likewise, NCNC
President Pandey expressed his appreciation to individuals, organisations,
families, businesses and community groups that had contributed to the
humanitarian campaign according to their capacity.
He said the
support demonstrated the unity, love and solidarity of Nepalis with those
affected by the disaster. “When Nepal is in distress, our hearts also hurt with
Nepal,” he said.
Pandey said the
fundraising campaign would continue until October 31. He also announced that a
five-km run titled 'Walk for Nepal' would be organised the following week, with
a target of raising around US$10,000.
During the
campaign, Dedicated to Our Community of North Carolina contributed US$12,111,
Kanu Patel Divo Foundation US$5,002, Niral Shantilal Patel US$5,150, and Ishwar
and Kamala Devkota US$3,001.
Venkateshwara
Temple and Shirdi Sai Baba Temple each contributed US$3,000. The United Bengali
Association donated US$2,115, while the American Association of Bihar Jharkhand
Jhansi contributed US$2,000.
Similarly, Sandesh
Joshi donated US$1,100, Jeevan Neupane and Sarita Kandel US$1,001, while Ramila
and Bikash Sapkota, Rohil Bhattarai, Ashish Patel, Asian Focus Corporation, L
Workbiz and Tomita each contributed US$1,000.
