Nepal and Russia have discussed the issues
of Nepali nationals in the Russian Army, including the missing Nepali
nationals, and Nepali nationals detained in Ukraine as Prisoners of War and
compensation.
At the meeting of bilateral consultation
that concluded in Kathmandu on Wednesday, they also exchanged views on various
regional and multilateral matters of mutual interest, including climate change
and cooperation in multilateral systems, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA)
informed in a statement.
The meeting, which also coincided with the
celebration of 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations
between Nepal and Russia, reviewed overall aspects of Nepal-Russia relations.
"The two sides appreciated the
longstanding friendship and close partnership between the two countries. While
briefing each other about the political and economic developments in each
other's countries, they reaffirmed their commitment to further promoting
cooperation and collaboration in various areas including education, human
resource development, culture, tourism, climate change, and trade and
investment, among others," read the statement.
Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai and
Deputy-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Andrey Rudenko co-chaired their
respective delegations.
The Russian delegation comprised of the
Ambassador of Russia to Nepal Aleksei Surovtsev, officials from the MoFA of
Russia as well as diplomats from the Embassy. Likewise, the Nepali delegation
included Head of Europe Division Ganesh Prasad Dhakal, officials from the MoFA
and the sectoral ministries.
Following the meeting, Foreign Secretary
Rai hosted a luncheon in honour of the Deputy Minister Rudenko, and
accompanying delegates.
The Protocol on Consultations between the foreign
ministries of Nepal and the Russian Federation was signed on 5 September 1995.
