Kathmandu, July 20: On the
occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic
relations between Nepal and the Russian Federation, Deputy Prime Minister and
Minister for Foreign Affairs Kamal Thapa and his Russian counterpart Sergei
Lavrov exchanged messages of congratulations on Wednesday.
Diplomatic relations between the
two countries was established on 20th July 1956.
In his message, DPM Thapa said
that the relations between Nepal and Russia was market by goodwill, friendship
and mutual cooperation, and remained close and cordial throughout the years.
"At this moment of
celebration, I would like to recall the significant contribution of the Russian
Federation in laying the foundation of socio-economic development in Nepal. The
exchange of visits at various levels, business contacts, tourism and cultural
exchanges have added new momentum to the relations between the two
countries," read the message as quoted in a press statement issued by the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He said that the two governments
had been working in close cooperation, both at bilateral and multilateral
levels, in addressing the global issues like terrorism, climate change and
interest of the least developed countries (LDCs).
Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov
wrote to DPM Thapa that Russia highly valued the independent external policy of
Nepal.
He also stated that the two
countries were united by dedication to idea of just and democratic world order
and to principle of supremacy of the international law.
"We are invariably aiming at
consistent promotion of the political dialogue between Russia and Nepal, cooperation in commercial, economic,
humanitarian and other practical spheres as well as constructive interaction in
world affairs," read the message from Lavrov.
