Atal Dev Dhakal named first South Asian Glocal Teen Hero

Atal Dev Dhakal of Nepal has been named the first South Asian Glocal Teen Hero 2026.

He was awarded with the title at the Glocal Teen Hero programme, which brought together winners from Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Bangladesh, organised by Glocal Pvt. Ltd. in Lalitpur on Tuesday.

Dhakal, a climate justice advocate and youth leader, was recognised for his work on climate action, environmental issues and youth participation in policy advocacy. He leads the Mountains and Glaciers Working Group within Younggo, where he advocates for climate finance, ecosystem protection and greater representation of marginalised youth in international decision-making.

His initiatives include efforts to build a youth network aimed at amplifying 100,000 youth voices ahead of COP31. He has also developed climate policy frameworks, regional climate ambassador initiatives and advocacy toolkits to support youth and university environmental clubs in engaging with climate governance, Glocal informed.

Representatives from the five participating countries attended the event which also featured the Alumni Excellence Award, which was presented to Ashish Panthi for his continued work following his participation in the Glocal Teen Hero programme.

Country winners from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Sri Lanka also participated in the regional programme. Bangladesh's Munazia Snigdha Moon was recognised for her work in social entrepreneurship, human rights and mental health advocacy. Bhutan's Ugyen Tsheden Tobgay was selected for her work in youth advocacy, broadcasting and inclusive education.

Likewise, India's Raghul R, from Tamil Nadu, was recognised for his work in technology, women's safety and social innovation. Sri Lanka's Mohamed Amazir Mohamed Amanath was recognised for his work in astronomy, STEM education and scientific research.

The regional jury highlighted projects addressing issues including climate action, gender rights, health and inclusive education.

The Glocal Teen Hero programme has been operating for 12 years and brought national winners from the five South Asian countries together for the first regional edition this year.
