Institutional structures needed to address climate change: Khanal

Kathmandu, Sept. 16

Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal has stressed the need to establish long-term institutional structures to effectively address climate change, saying it is a multilateral issue.

Addressing the second edition of the ‘MoFA Knowledge Forum’ organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, he said that although climate change is a multilateral issue, Nepal needs long-term institutional structures to address it effectively.

"Effective results on climate change could be achieved only by establishing appropriate institutions and coordinating with multilateral organisations," he said.

According to him, although issues discussed at international climate change conferences - including the Conference of the Parties (COP) - change over time, Nepal should focus on determining the institutional structures it needs and how to present its concerns effectively on international platforms.

“The important question is what kind of institutions Nepal needs and at which international forums we can present our issues strongly,” Khanal said.

The forum also sought views and recommendations from experts who have worked or are currently working in various areas of climate change at both national and international levels. Participants were invited to provide their advice and suggestions. The discussion also covered Nepal’s participation at the United Nations and the issues related to climate change that Nepal should raise and present at the international body.
