Kathmandu, Aug. 24
Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal has emphasised further strengthening bilateral relations between Nepal and Brazil in the days ahead.
Such relations could be promoted with a
particular focus on tourism, cultural exchanges and expanding people-to-people
ties, he said during his meeting with Brazilian ambassador to Nepal Claudio
Raja Gabaglia Lins at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) on Monday.
Lins paid a courtesy call on Foreign
Minister Khanal.
“Nepal and Brazil have maintained cordial
relations for a long time. We are committed to further strengthening and making
this relationship more productive in the days ahead,” Minister Khanal said.
“There
is considerable potential for developing tourism, cultural exchanges and
people-to-people relations between Nepal and Brazil. Further cooperation is
needed to translate these possibilities into reality,” he said.
FM Khanal also briefed the ambassador on
the priorities of the current government and said Nepal would continue its
cooperation with Brazil. He also praised Brazil’s leadership role in global
governance, particularly in South-South cooperation.
Ambassador Lins said that, despite having
arrived in Nepal only recently, he had been impressed by the country’s art and
culture and the warm hospitality of the Nepali people. He noted that Nepal and
Brazil had completed 50 years of diplomatic relations and said ties between the
two countries were becoming increasingly friendly and close.
Lins said a Brazilian technical team had
recently visited Nepal to advance cooperation in the dairy production sector.
He also said that the Nepali side had reviewed a draft memorandum of
understanding on cooperation in the sector and conveyed its feedback to the
Brazilian side a few days ago.
Similarly, Lins informed the minister that
Kathmandu University and Brazil’s Butantan Institute were cooperating on
research related to antivenom for snakebites. "Brazil is ready to
cooperate with Nepal in promoting tourism, investment and exports in line with
the priorities of the current government," he said.
